Since beginning my spiritual journey, I have become keenly aware of humans needing to compare ourselves with others, I hear colleagues lamenting about how much money others make in their department. I hear friends comparing themselves to their peers about how nice a car or big a house their friends own. I even hear comparisons of how I am moving faster through my spiritual journey than they.
The need to compare ourselves with others is the work of the ego. Our ego identifies with our ideas, things, and beliefs from our culture. Society, culture, religion, or even our families should not determine our own value. That value is inherent within our souls. When we can see this value without the external world deciding this for us, we can begin to feel differently about ourselves. When we feel this value within, we will feel grateful and thankful for who we are and all that we have in our lives.
Our need to compare stems from our lack of self esteem or value about ourselves arising from our emotional experiences that is then stored in our emotional landscape. Whenever we come across others who have more money, things, opportunities, or even positive experiences, we feel envy, jealousy, resentment, and even anger, and thereby, creating our own suffering. Awareness is the first step to overcoming this self created suffering.
When we are able to identify this part of ourselves and observe ego objectively, we no longer need to react to these negative emotions. In order to end these emotions from arising at all, we must heal our emotional wounds that caused our self esteem in the first place.
