“PAIN DOESN’T JUST SHOW UP IN OUR LIVES FOR NO REASON. IT’S A SIGN THAT SOMETHING IN OUR LIFE NEEDS TO CHANGE.” -Mandy Hale (via infinite-paradox)
This morning while driving to work, I contemplated the above quote and the purpose of pain. Pain is an interesting phenomenon, and I believe the purpose of pain is to help us change our behaviors and for some of us, change the course of our lives. I have discussed with many people about how pain has changed their behaviors and sometimes their lives. After a massive heart attack, a friend changed his eating habits and began exercising. My cousin who suffers from mental illness attempted to take her own life as a result of her terrible emotional pain, and finally decided to begin taking medication that she much needed and now experiences a stable life.
These are just some examples of how pain will force us to look at our lives in a different way. When we experience pain, our minds and bodies do not like this pain, and we intuitively know that this is not a normal way of experiencing life. Our minds and bodies are programmed to feel pleasure, so pain feels like the opposite of pleasure. With this pain, we are forced to confront what we have been unwilling to earlier face in our lives.
I know that my emotional pain forced me to look at my childhood trauma and to confront what happened to me. I used this pain to understand my own behaviors, and how I need to change these behaviors in order to change the direction for my life. When the pain becomes intolerable or it may take our life, we begin to see this pain as an instrument of change for the course of our lives.
