Life skills are not taught in school, but rather learned from our parents and family members. Life skills are needed to get along with others, succeed in our chosen careers, and have a easier life experience. What are life skills? These are skills on communication, conflict management, setting appropriate boundaries, making appointments on time, a good work ethic, following through with our tasks even ones we don’t like, and others listed in the above photo.
What if our parents never taught us these life skills, or taught us some but not others? How do we acquire these skills later in life? This is what happened to me. Although I learned to work hard, I had poor communications, conflict management, anger management, and setting healthy boundaries in my interpersonal relationships. As a result, I had difficulties working with others, and frequently felt lost about what to do after conflicts with others.
Many of these skills, I acquired through psychological counseling, and now I read about different techniques in books and the Internet, and try them out to see how they work. I do not accept everything I read, as the techniques are only effective if they work for me. These skills I find are critical to having a harmonious and easier life experience.
