During my recent vacation, I visited the art museum to see “The Art Books of Henri Matisse.” What is most impressive and innovative about Matisse’s work is what he has left blank on the page allowing our mind’s imagination to fill in the details. The appearance of his simplicity is not so simple at all.
As I walked through the galleries filled with Matisse’s etchings, lithographs, and cutouts, I realized this is what much of life involves. When we see blanks in our relationships, life, or events, we fill in the unknown details with our mind’s imagination. Upon reflection in my own life, I realized that this is what I have done in my relationships with others and even in the events in my life.
When I encountered unknown details in my life, I filled them in with my own imagination of events and occurrences. This can be good or bad depending on our emotional and mental state. I have found it helpful sometimes, and destructive at other times as our imagination can go wild and obsess. This self awareness has given me much to ponder about, and I hope to fill in the unknown details in my life with positivity, love, and compassion in the future.
