I have been contemplating the concept of “What we resist, persists” introduced first by Carl Jung, the renowned psychotherapist. I find this concept to be perplexing, however, it is true. Energetically, when we resist something, we put forth that energy which attracts more of what we resist. Therefore, what we resist continues to persist. This is the basis under the Law of Attraction that like energy/frequency attracts like energy/frequency.
In order to overcome resistance, we must accept what is. For example, if we have an illness, we will not recover or overcome this illness until we have accepted this illness and begin to take steps to recover. Because many with illnesses want to stay positive for their recovery, they mistaken denial for being positive.
Many terminally ill people continue to do all the things they were doing before their illness even when they physically can no longer do it. Instead of taking time to recovery and for self care, they create more suffering and illness for themselves. They convince themselves and others that they need to do all these things to stay positive, but the reality is that they are in terrible denial about their illness.
Here again, it is the denial or resistance to what is, their illness, that creates more illness and suffering through their resistance. The ego creates this denial and even convinces us that we are staying positive, when in reality we simply are in denial and continue to resist what is, our reality. Full acceptance of our illness and maybe even coming to terms with our own death may be the only way out of more suffering. It is not only the illness or death that causes suffering, but the resistance to our illness or death that causes even more suffering. This suffering is caused by our fear, and acceptance means letting go of this fear.
For me this is particularly true, I have feared rejection and being unlovable, so I resist this fear which creates more rejection and more fear. This has persisted for my entire life, and now I must face this fear by letting it go. Letting go first requires our intention to release this fear, and then allowing this fear to rise within us without resistance. Eventually, the energy behind this fear will dissipate, and all thoughts associated with this fear also will disappear.
Sometimes, we hang onto these feelings, because it is all we know and we have become habituated to it. However, a more peaceful and beautiful life awaits us once we let it go. I have learned that this is the way out of my own suffering which I have experienced sometimes daily. Through practice each day, I know I will overcome this fear, and live the life I deserve. Sometimes when we resist an obstacle it gets stronger but when we greet it with awareness it evaporates.
