During our spiritual practice, we will inevitability come across the concept of emotional detachment. Emotional detachment is when we overcome our attachments to people and things in our lives based on our dependency for security and safety caused by our ego’s fears. When we overcome our emotional attachments to people and things, we become free from dependency on others and freeing ourselves of our own suffering. Because when we lose those and things we love in our lives that we have become dependent or emotionally attached, we suffer terribly from those loses.
When we overcome emotional attachment or become detached, we still love those in our lives, but we no longer need them to function or survive. This is accomplished by releasing ego. When ego is no longer in control, then these attachments also will fall away. To learn how to release ego, please see my tab on “Observing Ego Practice” on my blogsite.
According to Wikipedia, emotional detachment disorder, in psychology, refers to an “inability to connect” with others emotionally, as well as a means of dealing with anxiety by preventing certain situations that trigger it; it is often described as “emotional numbing” or dissociation, depersonalization or in its chronic form depersonalization disorder.
Emotional detachment and emotional detachment disorder are two very different things. In Emotional detachment, this is a mindful practice done with intent. Emotional Detachment Disorder is caused by our ego usually resulting from trauma or abuse when we are unable to emotionally connect due to this trauma or abuse. It is done as a coping skill unconsciously in our minds caused by our ego’s need for security and safety. Many times, we are unaware that we are even doing this. The result is that we are unable to connect emotionally with those we love or others. We can improve our emotional detachment disorder through emotional release practice. Emotional detachment and emotional detachment disorder may appear to be similar, but when we consider the cause for this emotional detachment, we will quickly discover whether this is emotional detachment or emotional detachment disorder.
