Cane Goblets of Kenny Pieper
Since I began apprenticing with a glass artist last fall, I have been trying to learn as many different techniques as possible as an assistant. At my apprenticeship, one of the assistants is much more seasoned than the rest of us, so he ends up doing all the more technical work. Recently, I have been thinking that I really want to do more of the technical assisting and maybe, I should seek another apprenticeship. Coincidentally, this senior assistant’s wife recently had a baby, so he needs to take some time off from glassblowing to help care for the baby. As result, another assistant and I will be doing all the assisting for the next few months.
Today, another junior assistant and I did all the assisting and we did drills on many technical assisting necessary in making goblets. As you can see from the above photo, there are many parts of the goblet that must be created then attached together, making this process a multiple step process requiring a team of three. Today, I made my first successful blown foot which is the part that the goblet stands on. When creating a goblet, it is a carefully choreographed process when timing is critical in blowing and attaching all the parts.
When I blow glass, I am working in my right brain. Today, I consciously focused on the right brain where we lose track of time, focus in the moment, and focus on shapes and creativity. I have been consciously working on living in my right brain recently, and my experiences have been pretty successful. When I can shift from left brain to right brain, I can immediately create a meditative state without practicing meditation. This allows me to calm myself, become peaceful and quiet, and feel relaxed anytime during a busy day just as I would if I sat down and meditated.
I am consciously working on this practice until it becomes automatic. Try this technique yourself, and see if you can reach a meditative state spontaneously. Some people call this moving meditation or walking meditation. Blessings of light, Brooke (Copyright 2014 Kundalini Spirit with All Rights Reserved)
