When I began my spiritual work, the first thing I was told was to learn to forgive. When others hurt me, I forgave them and let go of the hurt. As a result, I took them back. The same person would repeat the same behaviors toward me and hurt me nearly the same way. This cycle repeated for me, particularly with men. This is called the cycle of abuse, and not the intention of forgiveness.
In some spiritual teachings, there is much passivity and always being positive. To truly live on our spiritual path, we must live a conscious life through truth of our reality. After walking down the wrong path, I realized that we must learn to forgive, but then we let them go. The biggest lesson for me is DO NOT REPEAT!
The purpose of forgiveness is so we no longer stay connected to those who injured us, and we are able to move on with our lives. It is not for the purpose of allowing the mistreatment or abuse to continue by taking them back. Therefore, forgive, let go, and do not repeat is my mantra now.
