Fear of Letting Go of Ego

I found this great article on “Fear of Letting Go of Ego,” by Gini Grey to share with you below:

“The ego is created by the thinking mind. It’s a conglomerate of concepts, perceptions, misperceptions, and people’s projections onto us. It isn’t who we are, yet because we are so thought dominant we think we are these ideas, feelings, and coping mechanisms.

While the ego is often judged as a negative aspect of ourselves, one to get rid of because of its sabotaging tendencies, it’s often trying to protect us in its dysfunctional ways. The more we struggle against it though, the stronger it grows. Yet all that is required is to see it for what it is and move beyond it. So why does it take most of us so long to do this; even those of us who are spiritually awakening?

Even though we are evolving to a higher level of consciousness, many of us still carry around our fears, judgments, resistance and emotional reactions. It takes an intense ascension process to strip us of our excess baggage and reveal who we really are. Then we see that we don’t need a false sense of self to protect us from the world. We are one with the Source of life and we have everything we need.

If we could simply let go of control and trust that we are already whole we might release our attachment to the ego much quicker. And yet letting go of false identities and dysfunctional coping mechanisms can create anxiety and depression. What are we really afraid of? Here are my insights.

We fear letting go of the ego because we don’t’ want to lose:

Our personality. The ego whispers (or in some cases yells) “Without me, you’ll be boring, flat and dumb”. We’ve become so identified with the ego, we think this is our true personality. But in truth, while the ego may sparkle at times, it has no brilliance compared to the unique vibration of the soul.

Our reactions. Crisis, drama and conflict make us feel alive, and give us a false belief that we can control through effort or manipulation. There’s a fear that without reactivity we might not set boundaries or get our needs met. Yet those of us on a conscious spiritual path know that being in a centered state of neutrality and non-resistance supports us to go with the flow where synchronicities and serendipity live.

Relationships. The small self believes in the illusion of separation so becomes attached in relationships resulting in codependency. It knows that as we become more enlightened our relationships may change and this creates fear. “If I am whole and don’t need anyone else, will I want anyone or will anyone want me?” it cries. As we uncover our true spiritual selves, we choose to be with others out of unconditional love and matching energy, not out of dependency, loyalty or guilt.

Games. Egos love to play games. They love to dawn roles and masks as they attempt to control, manipulate, compete and win. We’ve been playing these games of for eons using whatever tools work at the time (victimhood, power struggles, charm, persuasion, scapegoating, over responsibility, people pleasing and so forth). Even though we know these games don’t work anymore in higher levels of consciousness, we miss them a bit. It’s like watching a great caper movie that you don’t want to end. We fear life may become boring. It’s time we trust that we will enjoy the richness of a deeper life without the need for games.

The antics of the ego have certainly been interesting, while creating excitement, challenge and suffering. But if we really want to experience the essence of our true selves and the oneness with Source, we need to let go of the ego, or at least stop taking it so seriously. And the more of us that take this leap of faith, the bigger the possibility space for everyone to do this. Are you ready?”

  1. The question is “how do we look past our ego?” Does it require a kundalini-like awakening process? Maybe letting go of ego is not so much getting rid of it, as it is recognizing it for what it is (as stated above), and not letting it rule our lives. Or, maybe it is the kundalini that is required to release us from its clutches.

    1. I imagine it being different for everyone then. In my case, I felt the sense of ego drifting away from me as I approached the time of my awakening. Sounds strange to some, maybe…That’s how I perceived it. As if, the hold it had on me lessened, and once I experienced the power of the kundalini, it seems to have disappeared to a great degree.

Perhaps the ego still remains in some form and that it is nigh impossible to completely get rid of it in this physical existence, but that it is now different, less in charge of you. This is how it feels to me. As if I understand it for what it is…

      1. Hi Matthew, I wish I can say that I have released my ego because I am working through this now. I do not believe Kundalini automatically releases ego when raised. It may have in your circumstance, but it did not for me. I am doing ascension work in the hopes of releasing my ego since this is the phase of my work. I do not believe that ego dies, but rather it recedes greatly when released. I also believe that I will react and feel differently when I finally release it. Blessings, Brooke
