Using Your Dreams for Emotional Healing

Article by W. Brooke Chang, Pathway to Joy and Healing

Have you ever had a bad dream and wonder what it means? Dreams are our subconscious minds speaking to us, and therapists may help us analyze the meaning of these dreams. However, you can do your own dream analysis by first becoming self-aware of your emotional issues and problems.

Recently, I had a dream about being controlled by a strange man. I couldn’t specifically identify this man, but I felt trapped and couldn’t leave. I felt afraid and tried to trick him in order to get away. Who was this man, I thought to myself when I awoke?  Why am I having this dream now?

As many of you who follow my blog may know that I experienced childhood trauma by the abuse involving my father. As a child, I was terrified of living in my unsafe home and being around my father. As a result of this trauma, my recent dream reflected my fears from childhood. But I haven’t had these fears in a very long time, so why am I having this dream now?

I currently am going through a transition from a working person to one who is retired. This new stage of my life has triggered my fears from childhood.  I am in unknown territory from applying for retirement to Long Term Care insurance. This stage also triggered, while I was applying for Long Term Care insurance, the dreaded issues of becoming infirm and dying. When we experience fears in our current life, our traumas may be triggered.

Dreams are the way our subconscious mind communicates with our conscious mind. Our dreams may be clear to us or nonsensical. Once you decipher these dreams, you can take steps to help your inner child feel safer.  You may need to calm your inner child by telling them you are here to protect them. Changing your inner dialogue may help alleviate further fears. Sometimes overcoming our current fears, by facing them through telling a trusted person or journaling, may begin to address and dissipate these fears.

Dreams are our ability to glean into our subconscious mind. Our subconscious stores the emotions and thoughts our conscious mind has suppressed or repressed. These dreams give us insights into our emotional issues and problems that our conscious mind may be unwilling and unable to see. They may be used as tools to help us with our emotional healing. May you find healing through your dreams. ~ Brooke

  3. […] The good news is that we have the ability to circumvent our fears through the unconsciousness.  What is the unconscious, and how do we tap into it? The most effective way to access our unconscious is through meditation, and according to Carl Jung, we also can access the unconscious through our dreams and daydreams/visions.
